The year was 1803. It was a time when the West was not only frontier; it was the undiscovered country. It was the time of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark before the trains of Prairie Schooners and settlers, before cowboys or cattle drives, before Colonel Colt’s six-shooter, and nearly three-quarters of a century before George Armstrong Custer and his men were killed at Little Big Horn. It was a time when the western fur trade was new, and only the first of the mountain men had left the Mississippi behind on their journey into the wilderness. It was there that Nathaniel Horne was alone and dying from the lack of food and the snows of winter. It was there a savage native people, in spite of the fact that he was not a true Human Being, gave him shelter. From that kindness came Snow-Walker, and Nathaniel Horne began a new life with his Incidents Among the Savages.

There is power in Incidents Among the Savages. True power, not the golly-I-need-to-tell-a-story kind that so often swims in the shallows. Certainly, this book could be seen as contending well against the likes of Little Big Man, Dances with Wolves, or any of several classics by Jack London. At its core, however, it's so much more than any of those, or even the sum of all of them. The casual reader may not even spot the code, but at its heart, Lewis's masterpiece is full of humor as well as loss, an easy to read, action driven...spiritual textbook.

Others may not agree with me on that point, but clues and/or examples abound...although I do tend to wonder why it is that the author has once again connected me, personally, with one of the darker characters. I, too, have experienced a Black-Wolf-Watching, though in my case it happened at age five, not at birth as occurred in the case of the story's number one villain. Many of the book's "hidden in plain sight" lessons point out the possibility of doing that which is considered impossible by those not aware of Spirit-That-Lives-In-All-Things. (Invisibility? Nothing to it. Awareness of every person within shooting range, even in the middle of the night? Piece of cake.)

All of the lives, deaths, injuries, triumphs, and tragedies are--for those with the eyes to see--revealed as mere superficial circumstances and conditions, an endless stream of opportunities to grow spiritually. The differences between races and cultures mean nothing; there are heroes and villains from every possible source, which is as it has always been and always will be. Rapacious whites...renegade Indians...even the thoroughly homicidal escaped slave known as Black Moon...what's the difference? Quite frankly, there is none. Each Soul climbs the ladder or dives into the pit without regard to the body It wears for a time. We are all connected, yet each of us is also alone until Awareness shreds the veil and Truth is revealed.

Within that message lies the true power of this book. Still, if you're in it for the surface action, there's plenty of that, too. Either way, Incidents Among the Savages deserves Five Stars without question.

Incidents Among the Savages edition by David R Lewis Ulva Eldridge Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

As with all the other books by David R. Lewis I had difficulty putting them down as a result I often was stil reading at 130 AM. Just one more chapter seemed to be the way it goes with all his books. Can't wait until he produces a new book to read.
Well written. Enjoyed the humor, the dialogue, the characters. Good story, but very predictable plot in the style of Broken Arrow, Jeremiah Johnson, Sandes with Wolves, etc. White man learns from Redman, white man marries Indian, Wife dies, Whiteman returns to "civilization."
Being a Black man in America, I have great respect for Native Americans! My daughter is married to a human! Our people share a history together that speaks for itself. Your novel showed the righteous side of humans who love strength, pride, and honor among all else!
I've enjoyed a number of Mr. Lewis' books but this one I found to be the best yet. A wonderful story that weaves the transformation of a lone white man into one of the 'human beings', as the Indians refer to themselves, and an accepted member of a tribe of Sioux Indians, all against the backdrop of the advent of the white man's inevitable conquest of the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. His presence among the Indians is both a source of joy as well as a curse for these natives of the land. Read and enjoy the tale.
Heartbreaking! What a tragic finish to a thoroughly captivating tale. Dave, I have to hand it to you. You have the gift to transport the reader from the humdrum of everyday life and ride the Trail with Ole Ruben, or live among the Sioux with Walks in Snow. I'm completely transfixed by your tales of the West and complement you sincerely for bringing me personally hours of pleasurable escape into another era. Outstanding job, David. Thank you so much.
I dislike spending money on a book, spending many hours reading, to end up with a disasterous, depressing ending. The rest of the book is five stars, but would recommend not reading due to ending. I have read 10 of David Lewis’s books and rate them as five stars but he lost his way on this one.
This book was a good read up to the ending, which was tapered so quickly, it appeared to sneak up on the author. However, I did love Lewis' way with words; his semantics were terrific, and I will undoubtedly read more of his works just to enjoy his way with words. He seemed to be unprepared to end the plot and had to hurriedly find a way to close his story.
